Family & Consumer Science

Teacher: Melissa Winbourne

The FCS curriculum builds communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills that students can apply in everyday life. We prepare students with knowledge and skills to be productive individuals, members of a family and the workforce. Students learn through hands-on activities, resulting in higher retention of content matter.

The Nutrition and Culinary program introduces students to MyPlate, a guide to healthy eating. Curriculum topics include nutrition, safety and sanitation, accurate measuring techniques, kitchen equipment, following a recipe, functions of ingredients, principles of baking and examining foods from around the world. In culinary labs students work in groups to prepare simple foods, while reading and following recipes from scratch. Throughout the course there is a focus on group responsibilities and time management skills.
